The Ojibwa, Odawa and Potawatomi

Wikwemikong's History

Wikwemikong, home of the Three Fires Confederacy, is located on the largest freshwater island in the world, Manitoulin Island. Manitoulin has an area of 2,766 km and has 108 freshwater lakes, some of which have their own islands. Manitoulin Island is nestled close to the northern edge of beautiful Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. Wikwemikong is located on the eastern shore of Manitoulin and is 557.81 km, Wikwemikong is also Canada's only officially recognized Unceded Indian Reserve meaning that the Wikwemikong Band has not relinquished title to their land to the government by treaty or otherwise. We are the people of The Three Fires Confederacy, the Ojibwa, known as the faithkeepers, the Odawa, known as the traders, and the Pottawatomi known as the firekeepers. Wikwemikong translated means "bay of the beavers" in the Odawa dialect.
