Chronology of Events

  • 1763 British Crown issues Royal Proclamation protecting Indian Lands from encroachment by settlers and establishing the Crowns First Nation Relationship
  • 1836 Treaty of Manitoulin 1836, confirms Indian Title to the "Manitoulin Islands" (Including approximately 23,000 Islands)
  • 1849 Government appointed a Royal Commission to inquire into the Ojibway claims.
  • 1850 Robinson Huron Treaty: Mainland native surrender up to the height of land.
  • 1851 Wagemake and Papaisanse sent a petition to the Governor General
  • 1854 A diagram of a Sketch of the Point Grondine Indian Reserve handed to George Ironside by one of the principle men
  • 1968 Amalgamation - Point Grondine, South Bay and Wikwemikong

    Point Grondine

    Addresses the petition of 1851, first delivered to the government by the Chiefs of the Point Grondine Reserve.

    From 1851 to 1985, 134 years, there was no course of action legally or otherwise. In the fall of 1990, a Treaty Rights & Research Office was established within Band Administration to pursue Wikwemikong's Point Grondine boundary dispute.

    On July 19, 1994 an announcement was made that an agreement in principle had been reached with all three parties, Wikwemikong, Ontario, and Canada.

    This sketch of Point Grondine was made by Alex T. Peltier on August 24, 1994 and is not to scale. The blue outline shows what was originally surveyed, a total of 10,000 acres. The black outline shows what the boundry of the reserve should have been, a total of 34,000 acres.
