Wikwemikong Flag

The Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve Flag
The meaning of the flag as represented by the artist
James Mishibinijima

I had a request by a lady who signed my guest book enquiring as to the meaning of the flag which I use as a border on this web site. As a band member, I also became curious, and set out to find the meaning. My search brought me to the artist James Mishibinijima, and with his special permission I have related the meaning of the flag which he painted when he was younger titled the "Four Seasons".

The Four Seasons

Many years ago I painted a crest titled " The Four Seasons" and in this crest I painted symbols
of Moons, Foot Prints and Four Eagle Feathers that represent the
four seasons on Mother Earth.

The Moons represent all quarters they become throughout each month
before returning to it's full Moon again.

Then foot prints starting from the North, I placed the foot print of the Sacred Buffalo,
East I place the print of an Eagle, South the mouse that represents all
small animals that clean the surface of Mother Earth and
finally the Bear, instead of using the foot print of the Bear,
I used the foot print of man.

The reason why I used the foot print of a human is because a year before painting
this crest, a friend had harvested a bear, and skinning it,
I seen the image of a human being
as I seen myself laying on the ground.

You see, that foot print became very important to me, anything around
us is our own reflection as man, the circle never broke,
only mans way of thinking has destroyed his way of living.
